Wolfgang Gartner … Interviewed!
Categories: Feature 1, Interviews

A friend once asked me. if there was one producer you would like to be taught by, who would it be? Without hesitation my reply was Wolfgang Gartner. So this interview gives me great great pleasure in sharing with you.
First and foremost Where did the name Wolfgang Gartner come from?
No clue really I just needed a new name and figured I’d go German with an
alias this time.
are you making tracks that you want to stand the test of time or
that can be looked back on as killer tracks in that era?
I try to make music that is forward-thinking and ahead of its time. As for
whether it will stand the test of time, I guess only time will tell. That’s
not necessarily an idea at the forefront of my mind when I make music. My
whole thing is just trying to do something futuristic, that couldn’t have
been made 2, 3, or even 1 year ago. Whether it stands the test of time is
purely subjective. Some people think certain music achieves that, others
disagree completely.
What is your thought process when making a track or remix? Do you
think the beat up and make it or does it just happen through fiddling
on production tools?
I make killer drum loops, then once I’m vibing off the drums, I start
building the musical part. That’s usually it. Occasionally I’ll start with
a chord progression, but usually I just build the best drum groove I can and
then start adding sounds from there.
Since you have been making Electro/ tech house, who has been your
main influences (producers) on the dance music scene?
I have gone through a lot of different phases where I was really into what
specific artists were putting out at the time. At the moment I find myself
playing a lot of music in my DJ sets from the people who are influencing me
right now production-wise. And if I wrote that list of producers in this
interview, then my secret DJ weapons would no longer be secret!
We have noted that a lot of American rappers are now producing
dance tracks with the likes of David Guetta etc (because no one
listens to rap at the moment unless its Jay Z?). Beside Mc Flipside
are you working with any other singers/ producers from other genres of
music?
Yes. One in particular that I’m extremely excited about, but the project
isn’t complete yet so I can’t talk about it.
What gave you the inspiration or idea to remix “Symphony number 5″?
In 1996 I had produced a track where I sampled a bunch of classical music,
and turned it into a house track. It never got released. I was listening
to a bunch of my old 4-track tapes from the mid 90′s and heard this, and
decided it was a great idea at the moment and could probably be massive if I
did it right. So in the process of going through a bunch of classical music
looking for sounds, I heard Beethoven’s 5th, and that was it. It certainly
didn’t hurt that Beethoven’s 5th is public domain and I didn’t have to clear
the right to use it.
Can we expect an album from Wolfgang Gartner anytime soon?
I really have no idea. I’m quite comfortable releasing singles. Who knows
though.
Do you have any recommendations for dj/producers we should all be
keeping our eyes out for
Yeah. But again, if I told you, my secret weapons would no longer be
secret. :)
Ahhhh dammit. Gartner has left us in anticipation. Who is the secret weapon? All will obviously be revealed in good time. (sooner rather than later for curiosities sake)
