So the boys over at Finely Tuned are constantly pulling together one of the most comprehensive year’s of spot on, for front touring having brought out Shir Khan, Sammy Bannana’s, Don Diablo, Le Castle Vania, In Flagranti, Larry Tee, Goose and Infadels just to name a few.
Touring through late March will be the one and only ‘Punk’s Jump Up‘, bringing their bouncy, fun filled beats to our shoes!
Thanks to Finely Tuned I was lucky enough to have a bit of a Q and A.
Joe, David… first things first before the music, glam and whatever else is thrown in the mix where did your first paycheck come from?
David: making my own fanzine, I charged 40p per copy.
Joe: Spraying graffiti for the council!
Where did the the name Punks Jump Up originate?
We took it from the Brand Nubian track when we started out, we were playing a lot of hip hop & punk back then and felt the name captured the music we played.
Looking at your myspace your tastes vary from cherries, ice cream, big bottomed girls, sunsets, cheesecake, blueberries, ginger haired girls and ghosts… this something intwined into daily routine or only on special occasions?
David: As much and often as I possibly can…!!
Joe : i can’t help myself, it’s a daily fix
heads up as well.. if you do spot any ‘ginger haired girls’ or boys for that matter be sure to call them ‘ranga’s’ check this out – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEF2S5LJ4Mw
David: Oi, send them bullies over to me and I’ll deal with them good and proper..!
There was a great response from your recent remix on Lykke Li’s ‘Breaking It Up’ especially within the blogworld, how does it to compare to other music channels?
Blogs have helped us a lot. It’s a great way for dj’s, producers, artists to get their stuff out there. Great source of information, it’s what fanzines used to be. Then you got the file sharing issue….well it’s too late to turn back the clock now anyway so it’s better to use it to any advantage instead of trying to shut it down. It’s hardly a controversial issue anymore is it?
Was listening to some of your older stuff from back in 2007 including a Digitalism Remix of ‘Pogo’ and Meat Boy’s ‘Fireworks’, do you think your style has overly changed towards trends or have you stuck with something you believe works?
Both actually. We always been suckers for a good hook or a melody, so we’ve always kind of stuck to that in one way or another. We bring that with us and then our style evolves and getting influenced by whatever happens to be around.
Trends in themselves are not a bad thing, they start because something truly fresh, innovative and exciting comes up and changes everything around. Then of course there will be millions of copycats following. We’re trying to do our own thing within what’s going on now.
One of my favorite questions to ask, if you had the choice of spooning a dj/producer/musician of choice alive (or dead) who would it be?
Joe: prince
David: jelly bean benitez
Even after that I’m still mystefied what’s in store… go go go!
