AYA Lucky 13

Act Yo Age took some time out from there busy schedule to answer a few random questions one dark night not to long ago, they were fed up with the usual questions what, where, when, how and why, so I racked my brain to make this one a little different than the usual blah blah blah, Enjoy.

With a name like Act Yo Age you both must be still into something’s that you grew up with as kids, what fads did you phase through, how were the cartoons, action figures, Pokémon (for the younger kids)? Do you still throwback to the good old days every now and then?

Hahahaaa… Yes, our name speaks volumes; we extol its virtues at every opportunity! Hahahahaaaa. We grew up in an age of wonder and mystery, (and sore thumbs) the Nintendo, Sega, Commodore 64 and Atari all played a big part in our formative years. Cartoons were pretty much the same, with the notable exception of TMNT and a honourable mention to Danger-Mouse. Action figures were fun, and was sick for Micro-Machines (and lighter fluid) but was more fascinated with my Sister’s Barbie dolls with their impossibly long legs, humps and curves, With our production we totally throwback to our early influences, especially when it come to digging little treats, sneaky vox hooks etc. We like to evoke flashbacks when you hear our music, taking you to a place that is familiar, yet different, comfortable but new.

You keep a busy schedule touring for the new mix sweat it out volume 2 how do you unwind after you have wrecked the venue? Palettes, yoga, badminton?

Well when we have downtime, we have we can be found in our dungeon of magic, toiling away crafting up new beats. We have just finished our next single and are working on some crazy remixes right now, so that eats up most of our free time. Other than that, sure Yoga, Pilate’s, all good wholesome fun… We love to cook too, so that is high on the list, summer is the beach, you know socialising, all the usual bullshit.

What are the tracks that make you sing in the shower with joy like a choirboy?

Hmmmn.. Personally, I’m caught surprised by myself at what I will be singing Bette Middler seems to figure quite regularly (most disturbing!!) in my repertoire of nonsense. To be honest, I’m more of a whistler, each day at least once or twice a day I find myself whistling some little ditty, It’s a funny question cause my girly always bust me singing at home, usually the most embarrassing things.

What is your fun-nest time while wet?

That’s easy, we had a crazy house party and my place a while back and we all got in the tub and drank wine till forever and went time traveling, with sunglasses and cigarettes. Think there was six people in there at one point. We have pictures, but it’s probably not appropriate so you will just have to use your imagination.

Can you let the cat out of the bag and let us know what’s the go with the single and the remixes you are working on or are they top secret?

Our new single is finished and we can give you the scoop. Its called NIGHT OF THE HORNHEADZ and it is featuring NYC heavyweight and all round good guy, DROP THE LIME. We collaborated with Luca sometime ago and this is the monster we birthed. We are sure that it will be well received, We have had early support from SINDEN, BOY B BIT, MALENTE, KISSY SELL OUT, MAD DECENT, DUBSIDED and many more. Its coming out on our home-grown home SWEAT IT OUT, the remix package is under way, all I can say is that there will be something for everyone, previews up on MySpace for those of you so inclined.

You say that you throw back to the early days and influences will there be any dabbling in genres that are out of your comfort zone?

Yes, we are dabblers indeed. We totally love to cook up a new direction and fresh sounds. We like to push out a little, outta the comfort zone every time we work. Overall music is changing and we are riding the wave. More techier, housey, ethnoid flavours are coming back into our sound and we couldn’t be happier, we both grew up with this sound and its a glad return have it seep back into our production and also our Dj shows. This change is taking place at large too; check the new NADASTROM, RENAISSANCE MAN releases for fine examples of future heat.

Are you keen to collaborate with anyone in particular?

Hmmmmnnn.. Yes like a million people, STEVIE WONDER, NINA SIMONE, ARRON NEVILLE, AVERAGE WHITE BAND, DAVID BOWIE, FREDDY MERCURY, all the finest toasters and MC’s from history’s pages, all the new Crunk bleeders, sheeeeeite The possibilities are endless. The other day on a plane to Geelong we met a guy who works with the NSW Marching band and plays multiple brass instruments, we would love to work with those guys and gals. Endless possibilities and goodness coming. We also have a remix coming out with Marina Ex BONDE DO ROLE

I have heard the releases by Nadastrom and Renaissance Man, ‘Spray Can’ is amazing it’s a boiler room track for sure. What are some other Artists that you are jumping up and down saying how good are these?

Wow, we feel like music is once again alive and breeding, its mutating and cross-pollinating in so many exciting ways. AYA faves are long time lovers of the heavy weight unstoppable Brick Lane Mafia, SOLO, RIVA STARR, MOWGLI or MINIMOW as he now rolls. HANNAH HOLLAND is total killing. MAJOR LAZER have just proven once again beyond any shadow of a doubt that they are the two hottest producers to walk the earth, well possibly the best networkers, (hahahahaa)

KID KAIO and AFROJACK are flipping the switch on the whole Dutchy house thang, NACHOLOVERS are leading the way too. DANCE AREA, ZOMBIE NATION, TIGA, STYLE OF EYE… Way too many to list so sorry if we forgot any of our crew

Finally, the boats sinking what do you save?

That’s easy, the girl with the Spaceship and the twinkle in her eyes.

Well there you have it readers those fun loving party starters have a new bomb ready to drop any minute now with the fabulous Drop the Lime, its safe to assume there are big things in store for Act Yo Age in the near future so keep watching stoney for updates on these Party Yahoos.

Nacho Lovers!

Nacho Lovers are about to hit Australian shores, with that in mind I shot them a few questions to get the low down on what we can expect from their tour, what they listen too and who they wanna parachute with. Check it.

Hatch – So Andrew and Scott Aka Nacho Lovers, Let our readers know who you guys are and what makes your pairing so unique?

NL – Well we’re two guys from Canada. Andrew is from Toronto and I’m from Hamilton, which is a more gully city an hour west of Toronto. We are a unique pairing because people from Hamilton usually just beat up Torontonians. Instead I’m making music with one.

Hatch – With your tour of Australia here in just days, what are your plans for tearing the Australian Venues apart? Any mischief/sightseeing on the cards?

NL – I think Andrew wants to go on an expedition of sorts and I want to get stung by the reef. But both of us really just want to play some House and Techno.

Hatch – What are your thoughts on Blogs and Myspace, and the influence and direction the music industry is taking due to these new forms of unearthing talent all over the place?

NL – We don’t really visit blogs too much but shout out to Curbcrawlers, our favourite blog. Myspace is great for hearing your favourite artists music a little before they put it out. But to us, the influence will always come from record stores. There are fewer by the day, but some great ones are still around and they’re the most inspiring way to find music.

Hatch – Your Acid Life EP is quite nice indeed, are there anymore thumping releases on the horizon maybe even an LP?

NL – We have two new remixes coming up shortly. One for Alexander Robotnick, which will be on Fool’s Gold records. Another for the group Cubic Zirconia

Lately we have been doing some new originals that are quite different from what we’ve done thus far. A lot deeper and more straight up techno. We love them but we haven’t really decided how they will be released yet.

Hatch – Nacho Lovers get the party jumping like a kangaroo on pills, when your not behind the mixing desk or the decks what are you listening too?

NL – When Andrew and I are driving around together we are probably listening to some DJ Koze, Smith N hack, or some newer house like Arto Mwambe or La Pena… When I’m at home cleaning or whatever I like to listen to a few bands like Studio, Dungen or old strange folk stuff like Robbie Basho or Satwa. I really like the australian band Tame Impala….

Hatch – Considering all the amazing artists out there theses days is there one in particular that you would love to pick their brain for collaboration?

NL – There might be but the best ones should probably be left to mystery…

Hatch – Finally, if you could tandem parachute with anyone dead or alive who would it be?

NL – someone pleasant to be that close to on the way down I guess…

Well how about that Nacho Lovers wanna holiday on the reef maybe get lost in the outback and at some point spin some techno and house for good measure and record stores are still the only place to get your music fix.

Press Release – Nacho Lovers

***NACHO LOVERS***

AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES

Signed to A-Traks Fool’s Gold record label, and championed by Claude Von Stroke and MSTRKRFT to name a few, the Nacho Lovers are two DJs/producers who’s melodic madness is taking the US by storm.

The Canadian duo, Andrew Ross and Scott Seewhale have been busy busy busy remixing everyone from Chromeo’s 100 Per Cent to Pase Rock’s Get Money Kids, both getting massive amounts of airplay

Toronto’s trusted Eye Weekly news-title described them as “developing a stronger sense of song writing and melody” compared to their peers. Their unique sound combines ‘vintage acid synths’ with modern techno and house. It works! Picked up by A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, and signed to their label other artists on the roster include Kid Sister, Sammy Bananas and Chromeo.

With a Fools Gold podcast in the works Nacho Lovers is a name to watch out for in 2009 (and no, we don’t mean pub munchies!!).
