PARISIAN POWER HOUSE – DON RIMINI INTERVIEW

Categories:  Interviews, Music

Don Rimini was recently in the country and tore a hole in the space time continuum while he was here, during his visit I was given the chance to ask Don a few questions thanks to Pulse Radio and Finely Tuned. Due to the redesign this interview is just coming out of the vault, also thanks to Matt a friend of Stoney Roads for translating the questions into french for Don.

Here is the result.

Hatch - Don tell our readers a little about who you are, where you come from and what makes you tick?

Don – Don Rimini, Xavier Gassemann, original parisian, producer, dj, trouble kid, true geek, your best friend, Santa Claus ‘ son, Ron Jeremy, the man hidden just behind you

Hatch – In the blogosphere you are quite well known, do you attribute blogs to your success in recent years?

Don – Yes and no, Blogs surely helped me but not them only. Fluokids and Discobelle were the first one to show some interest on ‘let me back up’ Then other DJ’s of course did a lot by playing my tracks, I think that’s all this and that helped develop the Don Rimini name.

Hatch – What are your thoughts and feelings on the blogging scene and hows its effecting the way in which artists music is being freely distributed to the masses?

Don – Nowadays many artists use the blogsphere to reach an audience. Personaly I discovered a lot of bands through internet : myspace, various blogs and that’s pretty cool. It’s my way to keep updated on the fresh music.

The problem is that anybody can get anything or almost, instantly in your computer, for free and often without the artist ‘s consent. And people end up consuming the music like they would go to a fast food : eat fast, digest fast and jump straight on something else. The ‘quest’ of the ultimate track that nobody has yet died, and the pleasure it used to give died alongside.

That’s probably why some of the labels or artists protect their production more than the others : it’s hard to find some boys noize or turbo or kitsune on blogs.

Hatch – I read in another interview that you bought your first turntable at 14, was this turntable the cataylist for your love of electronic music?

Don – My elder brothers made me discover house, techno, new beat, acid house… I bought my first turntables at the age of 14 and started to DJay.

Through the turntables, you can transmit your emotions, you can also be very technical, look at the DMC competition for example, you can make two different songs sounding as if i twas one. I keep on mixing on turntables, but CD now, and I still enjoy playing so much! Every single mix I do for a radio or for a blog is done the same way I djay in a club : live and direct with 2 turntables and a mixer.

Hatch – Living in Paris ‘the electronic music capital of the world’ does your music draw inspiration from the city, the people and its surrounding environment?

Don – Inspiration doesn’t come on demand. It can come from an horror movie, from the way a girl walks the street, from a club… It’s not because you live in Paris that you’re gonna make a good track. It would be to cool aha ha

Hatch – Are you excited to come tear up the dance floors in Australia?

Don – I’m definitely very eager to share some good moments with people from the other side of the planet. All my dj friends who went down there told me that Australia was a crazy place I was gonna get mad about!

Hatch – Who are some up and coming artist that are going to take to world by storm? any french producers that re going under the radar at the moment?

Don – Mashed Paper Klub – Get Ghetto2 new producers from belgium with a sample from some french rap music

Chukie - Let The Bass Kick – killer track.

Keith – an italian artist who won the franz ferdinan remix contest, his remixes and productions are dope

Among the french, I like Dro & Lodzy, Dilemn, who make powerfull electro.

Hatch – When your not producing music what are you doing?

Don – I go and buy more sneakers, or some caps. I visit my favorite blogs. Every week end I dj in a new city or I’m on tour. I play video games, I do some new mixes for myspace or for radios, for blogs. I hang out with my friends. I go to clubs. I listen to the tracks people send me and I get laid. Ah ha

Hatch – Lastly, if there was one person dead or alive you could tandem parachute with who would it be?

Don – A skydiver instructor, deceased if possible. Ha ha

Well there you have it Don reckons music downloads are like fast food, Paris is not as cool as we all think and Don torn down the roof in style on his Oz tour.

Don Rimini – Hools (Teat Cru Laser Phazer Remix)

Designer Drugs – Back Up in This (Don Rimini Lock Up Remix)

Hatch.
